How 8.25 percent is built.

State sales tax is 6.25 percent. On the city table for the main slice, the city adds 1.25 percent under local code 2165010, the county adds 0.5 percent under local code 4165001, and the hospital district adds 0.25 percent under local code 5165500. Those pieces add to 8.25 percent. File that sales return by the twentieth.

A slice of the city that sits in Martin County is different. The city rate is still 1.25 percent, and the table shows no extra county row, so the named total there is 7.5 percent. An address on the edge of town is not a detail to guess. The Comptroller locator is the check, and the rate is valid for the quarter you asked about.

We read those figures from the Comptroller sales tax pages and from the city rate table on 28 September 2026. A rate changes. The page should change with it. If you see a stale number, tell us and we will check the table again.

What the rate means for a close.

Tax collected is not income, and tax you owe is not a surprise you discover in the return. The deposit from a card batch often includes the tax. If that whole deposit is booked as sales, the month is proud and wrong. We split the tax out in the month the sale happened, and we watch the payable until the 20th payment leaves the bank.

Exemption certificates, a marketplace sale, and a job that starts in one city and ends in another are questions for the file, not slogans for this page. Bring the fact. We will say whether the rate you charged matches the place the sale belonged.

The tower people still measure by.

Every Texan who has driven in on the interstate knows the tower that held the tallest claim between Fort Worth and Phoenix for years, and the building that holds it now. We have not stood at the base of it. We see a tall building and also see a set of books. Property tax, a tenant deposit, and a sales tax payable can all live in the same structure. Beauty is allowed. The payable still has a due date.

Where the city rate actually gets lost.

The rate itself is rarely the mystery. The mystery is a deposit that arrived as one number and a sale that happened as another. Card batches, a marketplace payout, and a job that crossed a county line all do this. We split the tax in the month of the sale and we watch the payable until the payment on the 20th leaves the bank.

A shop that also holds royalty interests has two completely different taxes in the same file. One was already taken by a purchaser before the money arrived. The other is still sitting in the register, waiting for the 20th. Calling both of them the city tax is how a payable gets paid twice or missed. We name them apart on the first call if both are in the file.

If you are not sure which slice an address sits in, we do not guess from a zip code story. The Comptroller locator is the check, and an address on the edge of town is exactly where a guess goes wrong. Bring the address. We will say which total the table shows for the quarter you asked about.

Ask which rate you charged.
